Description
The cars covered in this book are the third generation 5 series models, known more commonly by their factory designation of E34. By the time they were introduced in 1988, the 5-series range was hot on the heels of the medium-sized Mercedes which had for so long been the class leader. By the time they went out of production, many people considered that they had surpassed Mercedes efforts and had set new standards. This was the range which saw BMW moving the 5-series into new areas. These were the first 5-series models to include an estate car (Touring), and the first to have V8 engines. Meanwhile, the tried and trusted six cylinder engines remained available, among them once again a standard setting turbodiesel which was upgraded in 1991. And, of course, there was plenty of scope for the tuning companies to work their magic and to emulate or exceed BMWs own achievements with the sublime high performance M5. These were truly excellent cars, from the power of their engines, through the elegance of their styling, and right down to the fit and finish of their interior details. While BMW has replaced them with even more refined and sophisticated models, enthusiastic drivers everywhere will not forget the very special driving experience which the E34 models offered in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Models covered: 518, 520, 530, 535, 540 & M5.
